Congress Greenlights Measure to Disclose Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will require the publication of official records associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House gave in after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, speeding up the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have waited long enough,” the top Senate Democrat declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

This legislation next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. The president stated on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Although the president has for an extended period dismissed the outcry over the official management of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the measure over the weekend, and said he would sign the measure if it is presented to him.

Reaction

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their supporters who were present in a viewing area, applauded after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from Clay Higgins, who said he worried the measure would disclose specific data of witnesses, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
