Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
